    It's a 86 325es, 230k thats been sitting for about 5yrs in the PO's garage.

1)When i got my car it had a surging idle goes from 1rpms to about 2100rpms then back down when cold. After its warmed up it idled between 1k-1200k(light surge). Thinking all it needs is just basic tune up, Saturday I changed the Oil(20w50) & filter, new plugs and wires(both bosch), and valve cover gasket, new breather hose from valve cover to the intake manifold, intake filter, octane booster(it has a full tank of 5yr old gas) and fuel injector cleaner. I'm currently not running the thermostat in it because i have to get a new one, it was stuck shut. The inside of the throttle body is very dirty as well as the inside of the AFM thingy is dirty as hell.

After i did the tune up it surged for a little (1k-1500k) then settled at 1k again. I drove it around the block a couple times, it felt better and a little stronger. When i get back to the house i pulled in and then all of a sudden the rpms drop to about 500 rpms and it sound like it's about to die. I rev it at 2k for like 30 secs and it settles again then it starts bogging down again.....Any idea whats causing this??

    2) how else can i remove the hood lock assembly? The threads on the bolts look to have been stripped, they just turn and turn.

    3) Can the AFM be cleaned and whats the best method??

Pull the ICV (idle control valve) and use some carb or brake cleaner. Go to town on the thing and make sure it dries completely before you put it back on.

C omebackand let us know what happens.

Surging idle is a symptom of a vacuum leak. Have you pulled off your intake boot and checked it for cracks? They like to crack between the ribs and right near the clamps and it's difficult to see without looking at it while off of the car.

Stand in front of your car with a flat screwdriver about 8-10 inches long. Look through the drivers side grill and you'll notice 1 round hole with teeth inside. Put the correct size flat screwdriver in it and turn right. That should pop your hood and you'll never need the inside latch........;)

i cant really help you with the hood, but the surging could just be your engine trying to cope with the turpentine thats left from 5 years of gas sitting. When i bought my car it would barely run till i filled it with good gas, and it had only sat for 1-2 years.

werd, it ran like crap the first day, i put two bottles of octane booster in there, and let it run for like 20 mins a day. i'm down to about half a tank of gas now..once it's registered i'll drive to the gas station, too many cops around here to risk it now..
i get followed alot in my daily so i'm always paronoid

I would say gas too since it has been sitting around. I would recommend seafoaming it.

They make MAF cleaner that you can use on the AFM
