Annoying rattle - transmission, clutch, shifter?

I get this annoying rattle that goes away when I depress the clutch. What the likely cause for this, the transmission, shifter linkage, clutch? The car shift fine through all gears. The only issue i sometime encounter is that when I put it in 1st gear it does not engage fully. I'll put in in 1st and being to drive only to realize that it's not in gear. On occasion it has actually slipped out of 1st.

    Thanks for your inputs.

it's the "getrag rattle". the layshaft bearings get worn and loose. It will last forever that way, it's just annoying. you can rebuild it if you want, or swap transmissions, but most older Getrags do that.

Ditto. Mine has done it ever since I've owned the car (about six years now). It'll quiet down if you add more gear fluid.
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
      Mark: "You never will."

I am on my third transmission which finally has a much quieter rattle (the first two sounded like a wooden roller coaster when driving) but unfortunately this one shifts worse... what do ya know.
