    cosmoline removal..

I remember reading about a product that was specifically made to dissolve cosmoline. I'm pulling my head off this weekend or the next and I want to clean everything up. I bought a whole gallon of castrol superclean, it works great on grease, but it doesn't do much to cosmoline and it also discolors aluminum (like my intake manifold, radiator, etc).

I think the product was carried by griot's garage, anyone know for sure?

If you're doing the head why not have a shop tank it? I know NAPA stores with machine shops do it. I was gonna call to get a quote today but I forgot. If you're referring to the VC and intake mani, you can get paint stripper from Autozone, Pepboys etc.

because it's kinda hard to drive to a shop when your motor is in peices. ;)

I also want to clean the cosmoline off all the painted areas on my car, so paint stripper is not going to work.

seems like gun collectors get to deal with the same problem, I got a lot of things to try from them: http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting...line/index.asp

also, the product I was thinking about made just for cosmoline removal is made by zymol: http://www.zymol.com/strik2.htm

$31 bucks, I'll probably try some of the simpler methods first.

I remember Jordan saying use gasoline.

yeah, but I'm not going to use gasoline on the paint in my engine bay, which is already pretty fragile.

I believe Jordan used Diesel. Works great as long as your cleaning individual pieces and you can soak them.

tried some citrus based cleaner on the cosmoline, it works a little better than super clean (and doesn't discolor shit) but it's off the shelf shit and not strong enough. I ended up ordering some of that Zymol "Strik" which is made specifically for cosmoline, I'll let you guys know how well it works.

Zep's w/ wire brush works well on the unpainted items.

yeah but that won't do me much good on the rest of my engine bay. if it comes down to it I could just sandblast the intake, but I don't really want to do that either.
