You know, the more I read this, the more I get irritated. Who the fuck are you to offer oil advice Ken? Will you please specifically tell me how mileage plays into oil thickness? Can you point out why 20W-50 is "unnecessarily thick?" What is your information? Do you have more experience than on your wonderful M10?

Please let me know, I might start calling you for technical information.

          I agree.

I would argue that 10w-30 is actually too thin for these motors (M20). And anyways if you check your owners manual it tells you right there that 10w-30 is only good if the temp is -30 C to 5 C.

There is so much crap out there on what oil to use but if people would only read the fucking manual.

I use 15W-50 in the summer and 5W-50 in the winter. Works great.

Look up the Mobil 1 website. They recommend which weights for which engines. 5w-30 is too thin.

According to the info published by most oil vendors 20w-50 is perfect for warm climates, short of using something like Redline or Amsoil. I wish I could get it in the big 5 quart jugs.

                Haha.

But seriously, people need to learn what the numbers mean.

The first number is important for cold starting. Therefore I use a 5W-50 in the winter beacause it flows like a 5 weight oil when cold and I use a 15W-50 in the summer because temperatures are warmer.

The second number is important for operating temperature protection therefore you need at least 40 in the second number. 10W-30 and 5W-30 are going provide the same level of protection when warm....crap.

Then by that logic, living where it never gets below 60 why use multi weight oil? I should just use 40 right?

I know people that run straight 50W in nice weather like yours.

Mobil 1 only offers so many options.

I just run 15w-50 synthetic year round, since I would hate to have my car be real loud.

5w-30 is way too thin. These M20's like to be using thick oil.

I don't think Mobil 1 makes a 10w-40 or 10w-30, do they? If they did, that'd be what I use.

You'll be fine for now. I ran 5w-30, before I knew that M20s liked thicker oil, and changed on my next oil change.

They make a 10w-30 but that is just as thin at operating temp as a 5w-30.

The second number is the important one people. You need at least 40 in the second number.

According to the BMW manual 10w-30 is only good up to 5 degrees celcius.

I use a 5W-50 synthetic in the Winter and I use Mobil 1 15W-50 in the summer. Here in my area we experience -25c weather in the winter and +40c in the summer so these oils offer a good range.

Really you should use the most viscous oil you can get away with.

According to BMW, you can go 10,000 miles on the same oil/filter.
