    Recovering conv hardtop

I asked this question in an existing thread in the Classified section and got no response, so hopefully more folks will see it here.

Has anyone replaced the exterior vinyl covering on an OEM convertible hardtop? I am thinking about buying a hartop that has some damage to the vinyl, and want to get some idea of whether it's possible to recover the top and if it's cost prohibitive.

I know some people have removed the vinyl and painted the top, but I like the look of the black vinyl.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Cory

    It can be done...

I plan on recovering mine this spring.

It's a pretty basic process being there are 3 panels to work with. I called up a supplier, and he estimated it would take about 4-5 yards of material.

Here's the link to the supplier...http://www.smsautofabrics.com/products/vinyl-tops.php

I plan on doing something a little more exotic than the the stock material.

Thanks for the response! Have you stripped the old vinyl off yet? Also, do you know if the rear window or the main seal on the top need to be removed?

...haven't stripped it yet, but it won't be too tough...

...it's begining to de-laminate all by itself.

Parts for the tops are no longer available from what I have read. Windows are available direct from Germany, but are over $500.

The trick to getting material under the seals is to use some small rope or cord and stuff it between the seal and the top to create a gap. Once the material is glued in, the edges can be laid in the gap. Then remove the cord and it will cover the edges of the material.
