ICV help

OK I finally got some time to work on on my new project (88 325IS) it has a really bad idel. The car has been sitting 18 months or so. It acts like the ICV from what I have read on here, I have a check engine light on but no way to check it, ( yes I know key on, gas pedel 5 times) it dose not work. I have pulled the the lead from the ICV with the car running and ther is no change in idle, in fact it gets a bit better.

So my question is, dose the make the ICV bad or the control module?

Rember this is the first BMW I have every worked on I am a GM guy normaly. I just wanted to do something diffrent for a change and I have always liked the E30's

also could be your mass air flow meter... but it willb e one of the 2. or a vacume leak. hows throttle respons?

if you cannot get the gas pedal trick to work, there are two possible causes. A) you are not doing it right, or B) your throttle posistion switch is not working (the TPS is what activates the codes). a bad TPS will also cause a bad idle. there are procedures for testing it listed in the bentley, you need a decent digital multimeter to test it properly.

Some early 88's use the early style computer that doesnt respond to the gas pedal trick. You just turn the key on and wait for the light to flash on it's own, it only has 4 codes to display; just count the number of flashes.

I spent a few hours trying to figure it out this weekend. I am thinkg AFM, I had it unpluged and when the CEL came on the idel smoothed right out. Allthough it was a bit low 600ish,and running rich as hell (I know the CEL)

kowalski, the throtle responce is great, wraps right up!

I am waiting on my bentleys and a few parts so we will see what all else it needs
