    Problem w/ the E34....any ideas?

Picked up the E34 today and once I got it up to 90kmh (the highest speed limit where I live) the steering wheel began to violently shake back and forth....vibrate if you will.

It has some replica M5 rims and I'm thinking they might not be hubcentric and need some rings. I highly doubt it's a serious problem as I inspected the undercarriage a week ago while the car was on a lift.....everything looked in order.

Anyhow, what else could cause this?

    Thanks!!

wow, 55mph is the highest limit there? I guess you guys might not have the open roads we do, but even 70mph seems a little stingy on the part of our state government..

anyway, I'm not too familliar with E34 suspension, but when my ball joints were shot that's what happened to my E30. basically you just need to jack up the front end of the car and check for play in the steering and suspension, a bent wheel will vibrate but won't usually cause violent shaking. of course not having hub centric wheels would also be a problem as well.

If the wheels are a replica M5 wheel for an E39, then yes, you do need hubcentric rings. The E39 hub is about 2mm larger than the E34. Those rings will fix your problem.

Check the thrust arm bushings in the front, they are the larger of the 2 arms, the ones more toward the rear. When those go bad they shake at around that speed. Also ditto trent, if they arent hubcentric the car will shake like hell.

Well the culprit was the rims.....none were hubcentric and one had a PLASTIC ring...others no rings at all.....LoL!!

Anyhow, got some hubcentric rings fitted and 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1's.....best of all, my wife is happy ;)
