Two things: Wow that stuff is heavy. Wow what a pain. My '87 eta has TWO layers of the stuff. Last night I got out the top layer and it felt like 25 pounds in the bag when I threw it out. It is a sticky and time consuming job. I attacked it with a wood chisel and a hammer and every so often I could get hold of it with my hands and rip out a big piece. I also poked a hole in my trunk floor with the chisel. Bahh! Anyway, I drove the car around after I was done and it didn't seem any louder. We'll see what it's like after I remove the second layer. I can't believe that BMW felt it so important to put 50 pounds of this crap in the trunk when I just had my interior door and rear seat side panels off to repair two dents and found almost nothing in the way of sound deadening there. And to answer any questions about why I'm doing this, yes, I want to remove the weight from my car. Yes, my dead AC compressor is coming out too so my weight balance should stay the same. And, either way, I don't care if the weight was put there for some other reason. I don't believe adding weight to be a good thing in respect to performance. A lighter car is faster, gets better gas mileage, turns and stops better, and puts less strain on the consumables like bushings and tires.

Ah, but your last statment is wrong. A BALANCED car, even if it's a few lbs heavier, will handle better.
But like you said, your AC is coming out anyway so you'll be fine.
Anybody who's cared to pay enough attention or knows how to drive worth a damn will notice right away that the car will oversteer more with just the slab out and no counter balanceing mod done in the front.Adam Fogg- '88 M3
Common sense- It's the new 'gifted'
