Wipers stopped working

I've searched and have noticed that E30s are known to have wiper issues. I was driving home and the wipers stopped mid-swipe. I know it's not the motor because when I turn the wiper signal on I can hear the motor working. Could it be the wiper relay? 87 325e

wiper relay would cause the wipers to act erractly turn on by themselves etc most likely what happened is the linkage came of somehow if you say you can hear the motor run.

check the bolt on the base of the wiper arm.

same thing happened to me and the first time it was the bolt connecting to the base of the wiper arm and the second was linkage located inside the engine bay. Just needed to be tightened. easy fix.
