After replacing the head and thermostat, the car is running hotter than it did. Right now it's usually a needle above 1/2. I've blead the coolant two times, so I'm faily confident that that's not the problem. It never goes above a needle below 3/4s. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

No thermostat allows the coolant to get that hot.Originally posted by kowalskimaybe you got a hotter tstat? try replacing the currnet one with a colder one.Comment

I'm going to shoot for replacing the water pump and flushing out the radiator.
Anyone happen to know where the coolant temp sensor is on the M42?The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment

The car runs hotter at night than during the day. So that means it's running hotter with cooler air. I'm really confused now.
It appears the number in the ETK for the t-stat is for the higher temp one.The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment

I've ruled out the gauge; the upper radiator hose is very hot.
I also have a few questions about the fan clutch. When the engine is hot, it should be hard to move, right?
The temperature seems to alternate daily from running closer to the 1/2 mark to running closer to 1/2 between 1/2 and 3/4s.
Any ideas would be helpful before I start dumping lots of money into new coolant things. The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment

After driving around for a few minutes and the temp gague is up, do BOTH radiator hoses get hot? What method are you using to bleed the system? Try giving the dash a good whack above the area where the temp gauge is, it's common for the gauge to get a loose connection. And check that you got the connections right for the temp sender and the temp sensor, one is for the gauge and one is for the motoronic.Adam Fogg- '88 M3

o yeah you might have the wires switched. As i recall my top hose is too hot to keep my hand on after driving my car at normal tempComment

I bleed the system by filling the expansion chamber to cold. Turning the car to ON, but not starting it. Filling the expansion chamber until it's about 2 inches above cold. Starting it, and filling the chamber until nothing but coolant comes out of the bleed screw.
I actually had a question. I'm thinking I got the t-stat disoriented. Is the arrow on the new one supposed to be pointing up or towards the top of the engine (so 30 degrees counterclock wise from up). I installed mine with the arrow pointing to the top of the engine. I will try moving it today and seeing what happens. The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment

I dont even remember putting an arrow facing a certain direction when i installed mine. Are you sure the whole thing isnt backwards? ive never bled my cooling system eitherComment
