    HELP. IDLE SUCKS

    Im getting to whitts end. I have no idea what it can be. the idle on my car is rather aweful, it sputters and kicks when cold and accelerating under 2200 rpm's. I've not found any vac leaks. New plugs, cap, rotor, valve adjustment & air filter. Ive used seafoam and every other trick with No success. The engine still sounds VERY loupy and you can feel a semi violent shitter in the car at a stop.

    HELP WITH POSSIBLE OPTIONS!!! PLEASE!!!!!

    open your valve cover and look for broken rocker arms.

    also, your description of the problem is pretty cryptic, and no I don't think it's your ICV (not PCV).

      what kinda of plugs did you change to? and are your wires shot? also try getting your timming adjusted, and check your MAF if no broken rockers, also do a compression test

        BMW Factory OEM Plugs from the dealership. W8LDR's i believe.

        The car starts just fine, turns over for about one second and fires right up.
        I spent the morning f-in around under the hood with my dad who knows
        old british cars.

        we've eliminated the ICV as a suspenct.
        we've not found any unmetered vaccum leaks.
        No smoke from the tailpipe under any circumstances.

        Once the engine is warm, the idle smooths out over 1000 rpms, but below 1000rpms the engine shakes and sounds like a misfire, but as far as we've observed there is no misfiring.


        BUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON!

        I did the pedal test and code 1215 came up.
        This checked out to be the Air Flow Meter! I cleaned the plug contacts and pluged it back in. No Idle improvement but the check engine light went off.

        I am very suspect of the Air Flow Meter now, could this be a cause for a loupy and rough idle??

        I am having the timing belt/tentioner replaced on tuesday, ill have a compression test done then as well as a valve adjustment.

        Thanks for your help so far! Replys concerning my MAF would be very appreciated!!!

          I'm definitely no mechanic, but it sounds like it could be your afm. They are fairly inexpensive used, so pick one up and swap 'em and see what happens; couldn't hurt. ;)

            I just went through the same thing. The AFM fixed it right up.

                yes I is # 1 in the diagram. BMA sells remaned ones 164 bucks + core, Which is only 66 dollars.

                  I know this is an old post, but did replacing the AFM fix your problems?
