Electric Fan Converstion...and aux fan question

I've been searchin the board about this, but figured I'd start a new thread since all the information seemed pretty confusing.

Number one, my fan clutch is beginning to go out - I know it's gonna go completely soon. I'm not gonna waste money on a new clutch if I wanna go electric.

So, I already have an extra aux/ac fan off of my parts car. The current aux fan doesn't turn on - hell, I can't even enable my ac. My AC button turns on the blower fan, but the aux fan and compressor don't turn. So - I'm not sure what's going on with that fan. Does anyone know why that wouldn't be working???

However, I would like to eventually get my AC system working again - which includes getting it recharged with R12 (it's completely empty now) and fixing the current auxiliery fan.

What I would like to do is take my extra aux fan, and put it in the place of my current fan clutch fan - is that possible, or would the fan be blowing the wrong direction?

What I'd like to eventually do is have an electric fan AND AC. Then wire my electric fan up so it's hooked to a temp probe. When it reaches a certain temp (not sure what that would be) it would turn on automatically. At the same time, I'd have a switch inside the car that would either have the fan on automatic (Temp controlled) or always on (for autocrosses and whatnot). This is doable, right?

So, basically, I'm wondering if I can use my extra aux fan in palce of my fan clutch. AND - what keeping my current aux fan from working?? Power issues maybe? Even my AC switch doesn't change colors!

    Thanks! :D

Ya the aux fan would be backwards. If you switch the polarity then it will spin right but the blades won't be faced right. I've got a kit FS with a 3600 cfm fan and all the wiring needed for it to be independent from the AC system.

I saw that, but it's a bit more than I can afford at the moment.

I'm thinking if I can at least get my aux fan working, I can unhook my compressor belt, and run the aux fan to keep my car cool. What should I check to see why my aux fan isn't even running??

aux fan resistor is the most common cause.

Well, turns out my #18 fuse was gone. This kept the aux fan from running on high - so that meant it probably didn't run at all when it needed the cooling.

Here's my other issue: My AC isn't engaging. Sure, I have no R12, but you'd think it would AT LEAST kick on.

It only puts the blower fan on to the #1 speed setting. other than that, my idle doesn't change, the compressor doesn't engage, nor does the front aux fan start spinning. ALSO, the light in the AC button doesn't turn blue either. I tried another AC button, but that gave me the same issue.

          Any ideas there?

Check that the wire from the AC harness is plugged into the ECU harness, it's a small wire by the ECU plug can't remeber the color off hand. Without freon the compressor shouldn't kick on but everything else should.

A/C system has a pressure switch. No R12, no A/C on.

ok when i hit my ac button, it doesnt turn blue, but i hear a click and the aux fan doesnt come on
it used to spin but now nothing. how would i tell if the fan is burnt out or if it is just the resistor

Well, unplug the connector at the fan and see if you have power going to the fan, then test to see if voltage is making it past the resistor. Then if needed connect voltage directly to the fan.

you probably won't be able to fit an aux fan in place of the clutch fan. the aux fan is about 3.5" thick. there are numerous 16" fans that are 2" thick that fit nicely, but they never tend to flow well.

you can also wire it into the stock wiring as well. you could get a lower temp thermo switch, play with the wiring, and you can get the lower temp part of the switch to trigger the high speed relay which in turn would power the fan.

since you plan on keeping the stock aux fan you could just leave all the stock wiring alone and wire all new stuff in for the new fan. you can get an adjustable thermoswitch for about 50.00, and that will include just about everything for the install. if you also want it switch controlled, then you'll also need another relay, relay harness, and a switch.

you will also want to fab up a shroud. luckily this is pretty easy. there is a lip on the top and bottom of the radiator that the stock shroud is clipped to. there are holes drill in it, and its raised about 1/4" off the fins of the radiator. cut a piece of sheet aluminum to fit, cut a hole for mounting the fan, and voila.
