How do I pull my carpet on just the passenger side?

So I was removing the passenger seat today to do some cleaning and found a soft bump underneath the carpet (like something was placed there. I remember when I bought the car the PO had a ton of mats over that section but when I removed them all I didn't see anything of concern.

My guess is this was a hack job at trying to stop some rust. I got underneath the car and looked up at the section. Apparently there is this hole there and it appears to have rust. The hole I'm talking about is something that is a part of the car and not a product of the rust.

I popped my head under the drivers side and it had this same hole under the driver foot-well except this side looked like it had a plug from the inside covering it up. Can someone tell me what that plug under both sides is for? I'm trying to remove my carpet to see what the deal is down there but have no clue how to just pull up that one side.

My guess is that there is a nice big fat rust spot that needs to be addressed. Any input would help. I'll try and get pictures of it.

Just pull the entire carpet out.
It will be more of a pita to just lift up the one side, than removing the whole thing.

And the plastic plugs are there to drain water, or something...honestly I have no idea, but they're there for some reason.

You can pull up the carpet quite a bit by

      -pulling the door jamb trim
-you know how directly under each seat there is a hole in the carpet for wiring? make an incision so that the slit continues up to the door jamb
      -remove front speaker trim
-pull up carpet and inspect the floor pans

My plastic plug broke because of rust around it so i pulled the carpet and welded a patch in. If you weld make sure to make a good complete weld and use silicone or something around it to stop it from leaking

Carpets can be a bitch to wrestle around. Just pull both seats, center console and all the little trim and pull the whole thing out.

In all honesty I really don't want to try and take the whole thing out. I'm happy with its condition and where it is minus that bump and the rust spot I'm sure is lurking underneath.

I've broken many a clip in my day and I'd like to avoid breaking anything on my car in the process. Anyone point me in the direction of a DIY thread/link?

^ you will break at least 3 1/2 clips you have to remember they are plastic and have been holding the same piece in the same place for at least 20 years.
