I would call some trusted shops in the area to get a good estimate.

It usually runs from 700-800 if I remember correctly. Sometimes more than that.

It'd be around 100 in parts if you did it your self.

            OMG - Do it yourself - HG = $17-$20.

Spend a few extra $$ and go ahead and replace you belts in the process plus it's a great learning experince and an opportunity to clean up the engine bay a bit.

Um, the job requires bare minimum...

              valve cover gasket
              head gasket
              head bolt set
              timing belt
              exhuast manifold to downpipe gaskets

That is if you pull the head with the intake and exhaust manifolds still on it. This is the way I do it, but its seriously heavy.

hehehe.. sorry I'm still thinking about things as they are in my state of rebuild.. I'm already replacing alot of those parts as we speak and I've throw around the idea of replacing the HG but not until I do a compression check to see if it's really needed first.

Also.. I forget sometimes that for some people their E30 is their daily driver so taking a few weeks to tear it down is a major inconvenience. For me it;s just fun.

you can do a headgasket yourself on a weekend easily if you have the correct tools. Now that I've torn mine down once I think I could do it in one day (I spent a lot of time cleaning parts last time!).

Amen brother.. I've spent atleast $40 in degreaser alone but in the long run it makes working on your car 10 times easier.

I just finished doing this TODAY!
It's not hard, took me a whole 4 days to do it because I'm OCD about it and the weather was bad for about 2 1/2 days. Just make sure you label EVERYTHING that gets taken off. Then it makes it easy to put everything back together. Take a few pictures of random stuff also, it lets you know EXACTLY where a few things you may end up having questions about when putting it back together.
Make sure you have a torque wrench also....it is a neccessity.

I had mine off for a bit longer, but I had a lot of problems to get professionally fixed. ;)

Yea, I had my head off for a LONG while. (about 2 months) I had to go through getting a new head, having it shipped to the wrong address, re-shipped, getting gaskets, cleaning shit that probably didn't need to but I did anyways.....just random shit like that slowed me down.
