speedo was working. but then stopped.

when i bought this car (11/88 ) 325ix, the cluster would work sporadically. i assumed a bad si board. either the tach would work or the speedo. gas kind of. temp always. so i replaced the cluster, but kept the speedo gauge for the odometer. motometer to motometer btw.

when i first started up the car, all the gauges worked except the speedo. a friend said drive it around and let the si battery charge up. so i left it for the next day. surprise, next day everything works. speedo works until yesterday. also, gas is intermittent, if you tap it, it'll work again. but if you hit a bump it'll zoom to full. zoom. the lights on that half of the cluster also go out, but tapping the top will turn them on. nothing i do makes the speedo work though.

    im at a loss.

to further my problems, the switched power for the stereo is not switching on. which it was, a few days ago.

What does the fun (economy) meter do when the speedo stops working? If it reads normally, then you have a speedo issue. If it basically goes from one side to the other, then you have no speed signal.

I had a similar issue, sporadic speedo etc. Fixed it by replacing the gear in the cluster that the speedo relies on.

It was basically stripped and simply would not engage. Apparently its a pretty common problem with our clusters. I found a write-up for it either on here or bimmerforums, if i can find it again I'll post the link.
