So when my engine idles in neutral my car makes a clackity clack clack sound, when I push in the clutch the sound slowly goes away and ceases, If I rev up the engine in neutral the sound goes faster too, what can this be?

99% chance it's the bearing on the input shaft of the tranny.Originally posted by zandiIs a part on the tranmission? how easy/hard is it to change?
Just deal with it; you can't change the bearing without rebuilding the whole tranny.Adam Fogg- '88 M3

Ahh shit, will it cause an imminent failure, or soon failure of the tranmission? What else could go wrong because of this? Or is it just noise to deal with?Originally posted by AdamF 88iS99% chance it's the bearing on the input shaft of the tranny.Originally posted by zandiIs a part on the tranmission? how easy/hard is it to change?

It won't cause anything. It'll run like that for the rest of it's normal life.Originally posted by zandiAhh shit, will it cause an imminent failure, or soon failure of the tranmission? Mine's done this for the last three years...Originally posted by rwh11385i have that same exact noise.Originally posted by zandiSo when my engine idles in neutral my car makes a clackity clack clack sound, when I push in the clutch the sound slowly goes away and ceases, If I rev up the engine in neutral the sound goes faster too, what can this be?

Just push the clutch in before you turn it off! ;) No more problem!
The noise is the clutch release lever rattling against the input shaft as the engine shudders to a stop. When you push in the clutch, the lever has pressure on it and doesn't shake. Not to worry! It's not broken...Comment
