    Water pump bolt problem

So I over tightened a water pump bolt and broke it!! I got an extractor and followed the ditrections only to have it break off in the bolt. I went back to sears and they gave me a new set. Just not sure what to do since the edge I am trying to drill in is so rigid.. At this point I am willing to pay someone to get the bolt out. Even though I am broke.. Any ideas? Not enough room to grab it with vice grips either. Any help would be appreciated! I need to be able to drive to bimmerfest..

So now you have to drill into the easy out? I've been there; that really sucks. The reason is the metal of the easy out is hardened so it won't break. Ironic isn't it? The answer is to drill into it with a small bit. Use oil to keep the bit cool. If the oil starts to smoke stop drilling and wait for it to cool. Go slowly and keep sharpening the bit. Once you drilled all the way into it, get the next larger size bit ( hopefully you have bits graduated at 1/32 sizes ) and start again. This will take a very long time if you do it right.

I was thinking about grinding off the end of it since it is jagged and then giving it another go, since then I will have a flat surface to drill in to...

I just use heavy motor oil ( straight 40w ) when I do it.

put the water pump back on so you can use the hole of the water pump as a guide to drill out the old bolt. Go slow and take your time.

Just don't chew up the water pump hole. You'll have to grind the stump flat and punch a starter spot before you start.

I wouldn't mess with the same easy-out that broke on you already. Get some quality reverse drill bits. Drill at a very slow speed. Shavings should come out as you drill. Noise, heat, and high speed is bad. You will quickly ruin the bit that way. And definitely get it centered right with that punch. I have drilled out many, many broken bolts this way. Often times with the reverse bits, the bolt just unscrews. Since the head is broken off, there is no torque on the bolt now. You can also try hitting it counter clockwise with something to spin it loose instead of drilling.

The easy out broke off inside the bolt, so I am having to drill through it to get to the bolt. I had to go buy some titanium bits to try and get through it. I have been going slow and it seems like it is taking forever, because I have just been polishing the end of it. Since I couldn't get the bit to start it has been. I also only have a battery powered drill so after a while I have to recharge it...

For the future, you should study this page and pick out a really good kit. Yes they're expensive. But as you are finding out they could save you a lot of headache and time.

That's what I bought and broke off in the bolt. It was an extractor set I bought from sears for $40.. Not snap-on, but craftsman...

Drilling for 3 days straight to no avail... I think all the bits I bought are dull now. I can't even get one to start, bought some titanium bits and broke one. Gonna go pick up a cobalt bit in a little bit.. If this doesn't work I don't know what I am going to do. It would have taken me less time to swap out a new motor, I am just broke so that's not an option..
