    loss of power

    1984 m10 powered 318i

I had a fuel pump take a shit, so i replaced it with a brand new working one. Now it has trouble idleing while cold, keeps wanting to stall. It has great power until about 4k rpm, but anything over does nothing. IE you can rev to 5-6k rpm, but the car goes no where. (pulls hard to 4k, then falls flat on its face even tho the engine keeps revving).

I also replaced the pressure regulator on the fuel rail at the same time, and the fuel pump relay if that makes a difference.

How can an M10 lose any m.... nevermind :D

I would look into replacing the fuel filter. A clogged filter could have strained and killed the old pump and is still restricting flow with the new one. It doesn't explain the bad idle though. Another possibility is a clogged cat.

no cat, brand new filter. Maybe I just need to drive it around for a bit to work out any kinks.

i figured out the idle problem. I didnt think i needed it, but there is a dampener right after the high pressure pump. without that installed, it would not idle cold, putting it back fixed that problem.

if i had the wrong coding plug would that keep my car from making rpm's, ie rev limit it? I just did a cluster swap and now i cannot rev it past 5k rpm. I guess i'm doing another cluster swap to see if it fixes the problem....lol

Keep in mind this is an M10 you're talking about...

I am pretty confident that Jetronic doesn't use your tach for anything. I am also quite sure that the wrong coding plug would just make your tach read wrong.

i know its an M10, but after doing the fuel pump and cluster swap, its like half the motor it used to be.

I put in my old FPR and it solved my drive ability issues.

I should have listened to my own mantra, If it ain't broke, dont fix it!. I should have just replaced the broken pump and left everything else!
