Metalish sound coming from the engine bay

I have a video that i recorded but its 33.1mb i don't know if anyone can host it but i would gladly love to send it over AIM to someone if they can help out..

Anyways the sound appears to be coming from the part circled in red..

Although im not 100% sure its coming from there.

It sounds very metallic like a chain kinda sorta..and yes i know my 318is has a timing chain but i don't know how to diagnose a dying chain.

i dont know much about m42's but im fairly certain youre hearing chain slap. the part you circled is the oil filter housing. do the broom stick trick and listen with that or a long screwdriver. my money says youll pinpoint it to the timing cover

that's your oil filter, probably not the source of your noise. like the above poster said, it's probably your chain making noise, meaning you need a new tensioner.

well since we cant hear it its hard to say. its something that should be addressed and a tensioner is both easy and fairly cheap to do. id limp it over to the dealer and grab a new tensioner as soon as possible. just for piece of mind. drive it like DOAR until then

I have a 318is that after awhile developed a similar sound. I was fairly sure it was the timing chain also, so I replaced the chain tensioner. Unfortunately, that didn't eliminate the sound, so I took it in and had my mechanic take a look at it. I ended up having the plastic guide rails in the timing case replaced. The mechanic showed me one of the rails and it was worn and cracked pretty bad. While he was in there, I replaced all the rails, the chain and the gaskets. Not too cheap, but took care of the noise. I would try to do the tensioner 1st as it is a very easy job, and if that doesn't do it, could be your chain guide rails, about $600 parts & labor...

here's a good writeup about the chain tensioner...

yes "DOAR" (dumbest of all robs) has never rev'd his car past 2500 rpm. hes known as "the rev limiter"

I didn't take actual pics of the plastic rails from my car, but here's a link to the diagram of the timing case:

                      http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...g=11&fg=25

The #7 part on my car was cracked really bad and about to come apart. When I took it in, I had #7, #14, #6, & #20 replaced along with a new tensioner and timing chain. Now I don't really worry about reving to 7k...
