i got a light that shows up with 1.6 gallons left, according to the owners manual. Your bulb is probably blown, not terribly hard to replace, but can be frustrating

my gauge doesn't work, but light still comes one...i rely on that light lol.
never really knew how much i had left, just that i should fill er up asap.
never ran out though.
*knock on wood
The light for the reserve often goes out. When I picked up my E30 I was testing the gas milage, and the gauge and noticed the light was not working. It is a pain to replace the light if it is burned out. A word of advice, if the light is out... replace all the lights in the instrument cluster. Two days after I had replaced the reserve light, the tac. back light went out. (Karma) ;v)
My light came on when the needle went below the line...it was pretty hairy, I had 3/4 a tank when I left a town...didn't see another station until a ways after my light came on, driving through the middle of the desert on my way from Vegas to Phoenix

Yeah, I have replaced bulbs a couple times to see if it was working and I can never get it to go on. Gauge works fine but have never run it below the R because of being scared of running out of gas.
I would never know if my light works or not because I refill at 1/4 tank. I do not want the 21 years of nasties hanging out at the bottom of my tank getting pushed through the injectors in concentrated amounts.

The safe way to find out if the reserve light works is to pull the right side sender and allow all of the gas to drain out of the sender. The float will fall to the bottom of the sender and turn on the reserve light. If you do this with about a 1/4 tank of gas you can just lift the sender about half way out of the tank and you won't spill any fuel.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

With the car running or just in the on position?

Do you really think that the particles on the bottom of the tank don't get stirred up when driving? Really? Have you see now nice BMW filters are compaired to others? Plus - I've pulled my sensors out - and the bottom was as clean as could be. I think you're basing that on an old wives' tale.
