school me on turbo diesel 324

    hey,

i just came across a touring 324 with the turbo diesel engine. the car is a 1990 model imported from germany. i was curious to hear what people think about this engine- reliability, fun factor and cost to maintain. i'm searching stats on it now as we speak...

    thanks

    fairly reliable.

    Not fun.

Can be VERY expensive to maintain as parts are all but non existant in the US.

how slow are talking? its on a touring too, so i guess it would be pretty sluggish.

is it easy to squeeze power out of them? (eg like the new vw tdi's) and would it be worth modding one?

              thanks

fairly easy : turn up the boost a bit -> or add an Intercooler

                slight difficult : M51d25 swap

Fuck Id love to have one for the extra room and the economy. Making a fast car is easy, having something unique and driveable is more worthwhile.
                    Im now E30less.

actually the car looks pretty clean, and low kms too (about 160,000). i'm not planning on making anything crazy fast, but i do want something that won't be too much of a dog, without spending outrageous amounts of money. and the main reason i was drawn to the car in the first place was because it is a touring AND diesel (although i still don't know very much about these motors).

                        found this on bimmerforums...

                        M21
                        straight 6 SOHC 12V Diesel. 1983-1991 126kg 278lbs
                        Used in 324td, 524d/td
                        2.4 (112bhp), 2.4 Turbo (115bhp)

couldn't find torque specs though... should be pretty decent considering its diesel.

be careful @ around 160k, the flywheel has a tendency to break around that KM.. mine did, broke straight in two. Also watch out for bad head gaskets, don't rev it past 2k until it's warm.

This sounds like an excellent candidate for a grease car. www.greasecar.com
Its nice to see some 324d-td end up over here, I have searched for one but have only found the occasional 524 u.s speck car. Hopefully we will see more of these cars as fuel prices rise, anyway definitely a unique car from an economy stand point.
