i just purchased my first 1986 325es and was comparing it to my fathers ES of the same year but notice his tach stops at like 4500 or something while mine is at 6500. not sure what to think, different engines? i have records of all things done to my car since 1986 thanks to previous owner keeping the car in his family and i dont think my dad had any misc parts. any thoughts?

could of had an engine swap to the 2.5 ltr which when u do that, u need to change the cluster due to the higher reving power plant or could of just had the cluster swapped out by someone that couldn't get their hands on the e cluster.. or the car might not be an e. might b a i with the badges swapped. run your vin through realoem. you can also put up a pic of the engine up here and the guys will id it for u.sigpic

can you actually rev your engine to 6500rpm?
if you can, check your DME for an aftermarket chip.
unfortunatly i am not in the same state as my car and wont be for a while to check the chip, but i did bring it up to 6500 to shift....and it was nice :D

I have the same question about my 325es. I have the "i" gauge cluster, rev's to 6800rpm before hitting limiter. Checked the exhaust side of the block, says "2.7 ETA" I'm assuming it has either a chip or a DME swap. Hoping it also has a head swap e to i. Also, the temp. sensor doesn't work, which makes me lean towards a head swap because I know that you've got to swap all the sensors too. Anyway to find out which head is on it?sigpic
