    Questions on ordering main bearings

    Do you buy a whole set of various bearings or what? Or do you measure the crank shaft mains before ordering bearings? I just dont want to order stuff I dont need or pay for shipping twice.

    The first step is to measure the bearings and find out what "color" or "colors" you need. Most of the time a single "color" will give the correct clearance, but not always. Sometimes bearings from more than one "color" are required. Note that measuring the journals requires a micrometer that can read to a tenth.

      You also need to check the journals of the crank for taper and out-of-roundness. If you have too much of either, the crank needs to be reground, which will change what bearings you need.

      I've only ever seen main bearings sold as a set.

          I was going to have the crankshaft reground anyways (engine has 191k on it). I ask this because VAC motorsports sells main bearing set but they don't give you a size selection.

            Just because it has 191k doesn't mean the crank needs to be ground.

                don't grind BMW cranks. If a BMW crank is bad, throw it away and get another one. they are specially hardended, by the time you've ground it and had the journals rehardened and fucked around with oversized bearings, you could have just gotten a good crank and used the stock size bearings (99.999% of the time, the standard size bearings will fit perfectly on any BMW crank).

                there's no reason it should be bad, either. seriously. if you've got taper or other wierd shit, the crank is junk. normally, this should never, ever happen. I've had numerous BMW cranks and never seen one that was damaged or needed ground - even polishing the journals can be dangerous & uneccesary.

                      x3 Don't grind the crank, get another. I actually had one that was out of spec to the point where I had to get another. That motor was hammered.
