    1991 318is

alrighty guys, so i forgot to disconect my battery a while back doing some electrical work, and one of my wires fell and shorted out off the alternator. so i put everything back together, and the abs doesn't work. so i figured id check this fuse thats on the abs computer, or beside it, and well there isn't one there. no metal case, no wires going anywhere but into the engine bay. i tried swapping out with another computer but that didn't work, i checked for power on any of the plug wires, there was none. i swapped out the relays on the abs computer. no luck. im kinda lost now.... anyone have any ideas?

What wire was it exactly? Sometimes if the alternator isn't putting out enough juice the ABS light will come on, even before the battery light does. Check if you are getting 13.7ish volts at the battery while the car is running.

Leave the abs off, the car drives better without it.

it was the main power wire. im getting 13.7ish volts, thats the reason i dropped it, i put in a 150 amp alt. to power my light conversion, and my amps.

what makes you think the car drives better without abs? whats the advantage? also my brakes seem to be pretty stiff, im wonding if my brake booster is leaking or somthing like that? what else would cause stiff brakes.

        thanks

Honestly, I really have nothing to base my judgement on other then i've never had a car with working abs. Everytime that brake pedal pulsates when your wheels lock, is not a good feeling for me.

Does anything else not work suddenly? Fuse 6 ok?

no the abs has been going on for a while, the light turns off some times, rarley. and this has been on for about 6 months, all the fuses are good, all the relays are good. unless theres some hiding relays, and i know there is probably a fuse hiding but i can't find it...:(

Well if the light turns off sometimes then it can't be a fuse because fuese don't magically reconnect sometimes.

well i thinkt hat might just be a problem with the light on the dash, because if the lights off the abs still doesn't work... so yeah... and it hasn't worked since i dropped the power wire. where does the clump of wires go once it hits the engine bay? does it go into the fuese box? if so i may pull that appart and look arround for somthing fried and wip out the old solder gun. but if anyone has any other ideas for places to check im all eyes.

You could try and shake the fuse too sometimes it could be a intermittent problem. Just because a relay clicks doesnt mean its always working properly.

That main power wire goes to the battery distribution block on the pass side of the engine bay. There is also a fueseable link on there to protect it.

well i replaced all the relays...and all the fuses. but there was talk of fuse on the power wire for the abs.

on the distribution block there is a fusable link? or on the wire going there? because it still charges and everything and the wire is still live. or is there a fuse on one of the power wires comming off of the power block? ill check that out tomorrow... if anyone knows where it is, it would be nice because then i wouldnt have to cut appart all the insulation.

thumper3ld: what fuse is the ABS on in the 318is? does is it on the same circuit as anything else?

Also, is that a M-Tech II valence on your car?
