Best manual tranny fluid? Mobil one or Redline?

    Greetings,

I recently had my tranny fluid chaged with some castrol fluid and my tranny has a very hard time getting into gear when it is cold. I want to change the fluid this weekend. So what should I get, Mobil one (which weight is best?) or Redline MTL? I have a 5sp 325is. It seems like most of the board members use Redline MTL, is that the best to go with? Or does Mobil one offer a similar product? What do the dealerships use?

I use Redline MTL, once the fluid warms up it shifts great with it.

I use this race spec stuff, and its the summer here in the UK! when cold i cant get it into gear at all without rev matching! I have found that any other oil when gets warm makes the gear changes stiffer but this oil makes them easier, the gears are "sucked" in if you will.

SAE 75w90 or so should be a good start.

Do you use it for both your tranny and your diff?

I use Redline MTL in my tranny and Redline 75w90 with LSD additive in my diff, both are great. The diff fluid quieted up my 4.10 LSD a lot.

It's too light for the diff. I use 75-90 in there.

Redline specifically says NOT to run 75-90 in the tranny, says it right on the bottle. It's too heavy.

I too prefer thicker oil. Just be careful on the first few shifts until you get a little bit of heat going.
