it's an inductive pickup and goes around your #1 spark plug wire (your plug wire goes through it)

#1 is closest to the radiator. Normally that sensor comes assembled on the set of plug wires, so it will depend on how yours are made. You will need to remove the boot on one end of the wire to slide that sensor on.

It goes on the #6 wire, not the #1

Its so the engine knows what stroke its on so it can fire the injectors in banks of 3, instead of firing all 6 at once (which yours is doing due to being unplugged) mine was messed up, put a new one on...makes no difference in performance, maybe a marginal difference in gas mileage.

Looks like a knock sensor pickup wire. But I dont know if your car has that.

FLG is correct, i just assumed (incorrectly) it was #1.

It goes on 6 as seen on my car:

How about reading the other replies before giving this incorrect info?

No sir. Almost every engine ever made has cyl #1 on the water pump end. This includes M20s.

Interesting. I thought it was for the tach. I've never owned an M20, though.
