    cv shaft or no?

so guys, i have a vibration/rumbling sound/feel. it's speed related, not rpm related. car runs nice and smooth till you reach 60 mph then you get the rumble through 72 mph then it subsides although you can tell it's still there over 80. dosen't mater how fast the engine is running. 60 in 3rd, 4th or 5th, the sound/feel is the same. sounds like it's coming from the right rear part of the car. that sides cv joint has the boot ripped half off but still looks well lubricated in there. not the tires, already checked that out. what can be the symtems of a failing half shaft. if it was the drive shaft, you would notice the change with the rpm's right?

Sounds like it could be the CV to me also. How long has the boot been broken? It could also be something like a bad wheel bearing, although you would hear a noise also.

And the driveshaft is connected to the wheels, so no it is not rpm related with that.

failing halfshafts are usually related to fucked up differential mounts. Check the mounts and see if they are shot.

The whole rumbling/violent vibration is probably bad mounts

did have a clunking when starting off in 1st and then hitting 2nd. the top diff bolts where not tightened all the way down. did that and the clunking went away. could that have destroyed the cv and now thats the rumble? kind of sounds and feel like driving on real ruff road surface.

Sounds like it could be the halfshaft, or something else loose resonating at that speed alone.

But the halfshaft would be where I would start. Cheap and easy 20-25 minute replacement job.

i've got the shaft. whats the easiest way to get the old 1 off? gear puller/pusher or a peace of bar stock and bang it through? also when putting the new 1 in, if it's a snug fit, whats the best way to ram it home so to speak? hammer?

Your in cali, and don't understand that salt makes them corrode to the hub.

Hammer works. If you get to the point of a 3lb maul not working, 3 jaw gear puller works (But you have to remove the Rotordrum)

If those don't work. Shop press.

New one will slide right in. You can apply a light coat of anti-seize. I do it every time they're out. (Which has been twice)
