    12.67 volts, good or bad?

after driving around I stopped by autozone to check the battery, it was at 12.67 and the meter said to replace it. I was under the impression that over 12v is fine.

sometimes it just doesn't want to start, I'm starting to lean toward the starter.

What was used to test it? A midtronics tester? If it was, those test the capacitance of the battery.

I have no idea, I just went to autozone and asked to have the battery tested. The readout said it had 100% charge, 12.67v and the word replace (or something along those lines).

voltage has nothing to do with it

a Midtronics tester (like Advance has, not sure about AutoZone) also tests the CCA (cold cranking amps), which measures the battery's ability to produce current, aka Amps. Any battery that produces less than 85% of its origional CCA rating should be replaced.

Was it 12.67 without the engine running? If so, I would think that should be fine.

But like SpecM said, it's not just about voltage. I could make a potato battery that would read 12v, but it sure as hell won't start your car.

Yea dude...what cold cranking amps does the battery say...and what year is the battery...if it's 5+ years,it's probably ready for a new one...I seem to go thru batteries a lot

              Replace it.
              It's shot.

Or your charging system's not so hot.

Voltage is a very good indicator of the state
of a lead- acid system. (no, it doesn't work on your model airplane, nor your iPoop)

If you drove the car to CluelessZone, it should be pretty much
fully charged, and with no load, read well over 13v. Running, 13.7 or so.

If the battery has a weak cell, it'll read low. If the alternator's not fully functioning
it'll read low. If you have a bad connection somewhere (and there are a LOT of somewheres)
              it'll read low.

12.6 might be fully charged for a battery that's been at rest for over 24 hours, but
one in a car that's still warm should be in the low to mid 13's.

              Really.
