    z4 3.0ssk question

    alright well, i installed the 3.0 z4 kit yesterday using the "bend the rod" tequnique. and its working fine except it takes alot of force to get it into any gear, especially when your driving. just shifting though the gears around town i feel like im cramming the shit outa the tranny just to get it into gear. is this normal? when im WOT shifting, to get that quick shift that i was hoping for, i feel like im just trashing the tranny because i have to shift so god damn hard just to get it into the next gear.

    my question is, is this normal for this kit. and how bad is it hurting the tranny just using this kit on a day to day basis.

    my main worry is trashing the tranny (obviously)

    My effort increased, but not to the point I was uncomfortable. Maybe something is binding?

      My effort increased also, but not dirastically. When its dead cold though, going from first to second takes some effort.

        also, short shifters do not damage trannies, drivers do.

          yes i know that, what im asking is can the chance of damage be increased by the short shifter and the ammount of force it takes to switch gears.

            The amount of force only changed at the knob. You're putting more effort into the knob, but the same amount of effort is actually getting to the transmission. Get it?

            If it takes that much effort, I'd look elsewhere for a SSK.

                  get the 2.5 z4, and you probably wont have any problems at all, nor will the throws be as short. the shifter will be shorter though...

                    now that the 3.0 is in, im considering taking it out. its just requiring way to much effort switching gears. i think i might actaually be taking it out soon if i cant get used to it, we'll see.

                      thats odd, i've tried both the Z4 3.0 and m roadster (very similar dimensions) and neither required an extraordinary amount of effort, was the tranny working ok prior to the ssk?

                        yea the tranny was fine, could it be the fact that i had to bend the selector arm to clear the harmonic balencer? could a bad bend angle cause problems?

                          yeah that might be causing binding or something...I dont really know. you can remove the harmonic balancer will no ill effects as far as I know

                            It's just the physics of using a shorter rod. There is less leverage above the pivot point, thus requiring more effort to shift.

                            Yes, the Z4 3.0 rod is admittedly short, but some people like this effort to shift.

                            It's not the kit that is causing a problem. :)

                            The Z3 rod is a perfect fine upgrade as well.

                              My UUC kit is ultra short, and requires no more than stock effort.
