The wires are usually pulled through when removed from the connector itself. This was done during assembly. You can write a detailed pinout of the connector (1 side) and then pull each pin out using a pin extraction tool (electrical supply)

Then pull each wire through the grommet, and re-insert into the connector.

Another option is to cut the harness off, pull through grommet, then solder back together. If your good with electrical and soldering, you can still make it look very clean. Use heat shrink and a final large diameter heatshrink to cover it when your're done.

How difficult this is depends on which harness and grommet you need to pull in. The engine harness grommet is the one most commonly done and it isn't all that difficult to get into place.

Lubricate the grommet with liquid soap. Insert the harness through the hole and engage the area of the grommet from about 2-8 o'clock. Keeping pressure on the grommet, use a dull 1/4-3/8" screwdriver to push the rest of the lip down and into the hole.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have the harness in the engine and today I plan on pressure washing the bay and cleaning it up

So I have disconnected the ECU. SO I take laundry soap and lube the grommet and try again?

Use liquid hand or dishwashing soap.
