Oil shooting out of the oil filter gasket!!!??? Help
I've had some "near death experiences" with Fram as well heard alot of other people who do not like them.
I had one with a small slit like leak that developed within a week due to weak construction. Fram's (Allied-Signal) quality control is almost non-existant. A friend of mine who works at Pep-Boys said they get alot of defect complaints about them and swears they use a cheap filter element.
From what I understand the metal they use to make their filters has a tendacy to sometimes swell and they use cardboardend caps inside the filter so they aren't a good choice for synthetics.
Now I've also heard that recently they're trying to get a better on quality control since the bad press has started to catch up with them.
The reason most people buy and use Fram is because for one they are cheap but also, the reason they chose a bright orange color for their filter is so it is the first filter you look at when you spot it on the retail shelf.
"Tightenting the shit" out of the filter could be your problem, if you over tighten them it can deform the canister and leak everywhere. They only need to be as tight as you can get it with your hand.
I know that is not the correct solution and this could cause serious probs if I don't figure it out however, it hasn't happened again since I tightened the sh** out of it. Once these Mahle / Knecht filters I ordered get here I'll just have the shop do their thing their way and hope all goes welll.....
Fram, I do believe is the only filter manufacturer to still use cardboard in it. Everyone else uses metal. Frams actually aren't that cheap either. The Purolator is better AND cheaper. At Pep Boys it is anyways, which is where I work. I use a Mobil 1 filter on my truck because it has the check valve in it, and we also stopped carrying the Purolator for it. There are quite a few others with the check valves in them. However, I don't recall EVER seeing a Fram with the check valve.
Anyways, in response to the problem. I'd say that you've got something on your mounting service that is causing the leak. Also, you should NEVER tighten a filter that tight. If you do you will have one hell of a time getting it loose the next oil change. Even when they are put on ONE handed tight they can be difficult to get loose. The filters actually get, somehow, tighter the longer they're on there. Just make sure the mounting surface is clean and smooth, buy a Purolator or Wix filter, and be tighten it with ONE hand.
Didn't wanna read it all. But, do not tighten the oil filter to the point where you need a friggen long ass filter wrench to remove it. Hand tighten it, and when it heats up, it'll seat in there.
I've never had this issue, just do another oil change and make sure you don't have two gaskets in there.
