    what is this?

That little box with the red and green wires, next to the fuse console thing. My user's manual didn't mention it. I'm pretty sure it's aftermarket.

There is one on my M6 as well. I think it is something alarm related. Does your car have an alarm? It isn't anything BMW.

If it is an alarm system, I'd recommend taking it to a pro for removal if you don't want it there. I was quoted $40 for complete removal by a very competent stereo installer in my area.

              wow, quick responses! Thanks guys.

yeah, i suspected it was an alarm system. I bought my car from a dealer so I never got any of that important information. But now i'm not afraid to get it removed.

It's an early dealer instaled piece for your alarm that was put in here in the US. Most eS and iS car have them from early days.

It could be used to power and alarm, but it's an aux fuse box for accesories, one of the wires is always hot and the other is hot with the ignition, makes it easy to wire up any accesories under the hood.

What, so you could wire some foglights or somethin like that to it?

Yeah it’s for car phones, alarms, ect... It’s a factory or dealer installed "junction block".

I have always wondered the same question and could never find an answer.

I also always thought it had to be something like what rs4pro3 said.

It has two little terminals inside, so it had to be for giving power to something. I just figured it was to hook up diagnostic tools or something.
