Electrical bugs - wipers, tach, cluster

    Hi guys,
So my E30 has been having some electrical bugs lately. My main concern is that the windshield wipers only work when they want to. Same can be said for my gauge cluster lights, and my tachometer needle.

Any ideas what might be going wrong?

    Thanks

Tach needle can be si board batteries failing. Check my sig for more info on si board. If all cluster lights are being troublesome at same time, it's probably grounding lug above brake pedal. Wipers could be corroded connects at motor or fuse, try cleaning fuse contacts. failed motor last, replace

Greg thanks for the help. My main issue right now is the wipers - the other stuff I can live without for now (though I realize all 3 are probably related).

It seems like the problem could be around the fusebox. Fuse #5 (wiper fuse) has got that clip/wire under it (that leads to the 'wiper control unit' I believe), and when I was moving that around, my wipers worked for just a second - they are now stuck in the 'up' position on my windshield. I swapped out the fuse and the fuse seems to be fine.

Knowing this, what in this fuse area tends to be troublesome?

I would probe the wiper motor during operation. Find out what is missing. Either you do not have 12 volts or you do not have ground. 12 volts can be remedied by tracing the wires and inspect for corrosion or breaks. Continuity test the wire itself. Inspect each end for corrosion. Probe backward from there until you do see 12 volts during operation.

Grounding can be remedied by finding out of the wiper motor is grounded through mounting or through a wire. If by wire, trace it down and clean its connection to chassis ground. If by mounting, unmount and clean wiper motor body and contact point to chassis.
