What's wrong with my power steering?

    1991 318i, I just purchased.

I have put in a remanufactured steering rack and pinion I got from Napa, along with new tie rod ends, control arms, bushings, sway bar links, and new struts.

When I turn the wheel it has a couple inches of play in it, very light and easy to move back and fourth when it's centered. But when you turn the wheel more, it gets much stiffer, and requires a fair amount of effort to turn. The steering wheel feels the same before I replaced the original rack, but the suspension is obviously much better.

    My fluid level is full.

Would my power steering pump be malfunctioning? Or would that be something that either works or doesn't?

I've had two other E30s before, including a 91 318is, and the wheel on either of the cars wasn't this difficult to turn, and it they took smooth and even pressure throughout turning the steering wheel lock to lock.

Should be easy, try bleeding system more. ATF fluid should be used. Still problematic, then replace pump. Could be tired.
