Infamous oil-leaking-headgasket and 1 qt in a weekend (on track)??

So, many of you may be familiar (and if you aren't, you should be) of the infamous issue that e30's (m20s to be specific) have when a head goes back on after being removed. SOMETIMES that headgasket doesn't seal due to bolting sequence or something (what is the actual reason?) and ends up dripping oil down the side of the engine the whole time you're driving/running. (passenger side front corner)

Well, for about 2 years I've had this issue. I've dealt with it, disliked it - but dealt with it. I would usually put a qt in every 2-2.5k miles, due to this leak. And you can see the oil all over the side of my engine and underneath my car (joy! haha).

Anywho - this last weekend I did two days at Mid America Motorplex. On my drive home (450 miles one way) I had to top off my oil 1 quart. The kicker here is, I did the same on Friday afternoon when I drove to Omaha. So, in roughly 2.1 days, I went through a quart of oil!! It's worth noting that since my engine started leaking like this, I've only done 1 day HPDE's - so this is my first 2 day-er with this leak. I did MAM in 06 with the stock eta engine, and Hastings in 07 with my stroker, but before the leak started (I created the leak...stupid long story...lol).

    A few aspects I'm considering:
    - My drain for my oil seperator (from an e30 m3, and drained back into pan) does not seal very well - it's possible the consistant high rev's kept oil pressure high and pushed oil out of here
    - The consistantly high oil pressure forced more oil out of the headgasket leak than normal
    - I'm burning it cause of worn rings (comp test this weekend) - or it's getting past the oil seperator (no one complained of smoke)

Any other thoughts? My first, and most hopeful, thought is the elevated oil pressure basically pushing out a qt of oil out the leak in 2 days. I drove a solid 200+ miles on probably 65-70% full throttle, so I could see that as a possibility.

Anyone else have this issue? Seemed excessive to me.

This winter, I am fixing it once and for all! LOL

I'll now open the floor to brainstorming.

definitely has something to do with high pressure and more than likely burning oil. when you are at a track, that'll definitely happen on a tired engine.

The usual causes of oil leaks at the head gasket are a warped head or improper installation of the head. Even when the head isn't being removed to fix a head gasket problem there will usually be some warp. I always have a used head surfaced. While it is pretty easy to set a head on an engine with the engine out of the car and not damage the gasket, that is more difficult to manage when the engine is in the car. Well, if you have two people or use an engine hoist you can do it.

Other things that can go wrong include reuse of head bolts rather than new bolts, improper tightening of the bolts, or not getting the block totally clean.

Basically, if you do it right it won't leak.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Yea...ya know what. Now that I think of it - I don't think I had it surfaced last time! Bad bad Sean!! I should know better. I paid for it, I guess. :) That makes me feel good, I guess, cause now I know what I need to do to fix it.

I'd like to think it's not burning it. It's not a tired engine - I rebuilt it about 55k ago. However, with the supereta rods and eta crank, the rod/stroke ratio isn't really ideal - so some unique wear will be occuring. I'm hoping a compression test ends up favorable. haha

did my hg, used the wrong type of oil to lube the bolts and voila another 6hrs of dismantling and buying another hg, bolts etc and doing it alllll over again.

My advice, if its your daily driver make sure you have a backup plan ride if you cant finish the job in the same day, you should be able to but you never know. Get the head shaved, inspected for cracks and leaks, if it looks good plop that bitch on

it's pretty hard to mess up a TTY bolt. is it a Victor Reinz gasket?

i don't remember. But, I am pretty sure the last time I did it, I didn't have the head machined.
