Broke the key in trunk. Now what?

So my key broke off in the trunk lock.

And the trunk is currently locked. Any suggestions on how to get into the trunk or remove the lock?

It's a convertible so I can't go through the back seat.

How much key do you have to work with? My dad was able to remove a deeply stuck key bit using dental picks. He may have used some tiny ass pliers to pull it, but i think it was all picks. Lots of patience required.

If the whole key is in there just push it all the way in and rotate the cylinder with a tiny screwdriver to unlock.

Thanks for the dental pick suggestion. It's a good idea.

I would try to turn the lock with the broken part in there, but I think that's the root cause of my problem: the cylinder didn't turn at all even with a whole key.

Was there a valet key on the '88s? I'm thinking I just have a copy of a valet key and not a proper owner key.

Also, can someone tell me whether the trunk is locked when key slot is horizontal or vertical (or neither)?

If its vertical to the right its locked and wont unlock w/ the doors. If its locked and horizontal it will unlock with the doors.

When this happened to me, I managed to pull it out with a pick and some small needle nose pliers... one of those surgeon's plier clamp things would be even better.
