    Possible pinging?

When driving, between 3.5k and 5k rpms in 3rd, 4th, and 5th I can sometimes hear a very faint and continuous tapping/grinding sound that sounds like its coming from the engine bay. I can seemingly only hear it at WOT and with my windows UP. With my windows down it's inaudible.

I don't know what pinging is supposed to sound like, nor how loud it is. Maybe someone could explain? Should I assume that I'm pinging? I have a JC chip installed and that's it.

Chips make pinging entirely possible. Are you talking about wide open throttle between 3.5-5k?

It's very possible that its only valve tick that you are hearing. The valves on our cars are notoriously audible.

What octane gas are you running?

Yes, I only really hear it at WOT between 3.5-5k. It sounds kind of like a faint vacuum leak but not as loud...it could very well be the valves as well. I'm just trying to get a feel for how loud pinging is...from what I've read and remember, pinging should be able to be heard with windows open as it is loud.

        A vacuum leak wouldn't make a pinging sound I don't think.

You might actually have an exhaust leak in the gaskets that connect the exhaust manifolds to the cat downpipes. I get exhaust leaks there more often than I like to admit. An exhaust leak here makes the valves a lot louder because it reverberates in the engine bay. It's easy to see if there is a leak here. Start your car up when its cold with the hood open and just let it idle. If you put your hand around the joints where the manifolds meet the downpipes, you will be able to feel the exhaust escaping. Don't do it when its hot cause those things get HOT and you don't want to burn yourself now do you?
