    Any IX All-Wheel Drive Problems?

I have a buddy who is looking for an IX and he is a little worried about if the all-wheel drive system is reliable. Are there any common problems with them? What problems have you run into? Any info would be much appreciated.

the front driveshaft can strip (but it won't if you install it properly and with the correct lube). there are also aftermarket driveshafts that cost less than the factory one with 2" of spline rather than the 3/4" of the factory shaft. you can also burn out the VC if you run different sized tires or do anything else wierd (like towing the car with two wheels on the ground). Oh and if you let the transfer case run dry you will certainly fry the bearings and chain inside. it's a good idea to check it every 6 months, and to check the front driveshaft splines once a year.

otherwise, no, there aren't really any problems with it. you will always have people who don't own them telling you how much they break, but it really comes down to abuse and maintenance, and depends of course on how you drive..

I drive the piss out of my car and it's been holding up well, although
I'm planning on getting a lengthened front driveshaft next year. the stock one is weak (only 3/4" of the teeth engage, and they are only 1mm by 1mm), I've destroyed 2 and I'm working on my third. However, talking to people on the ix list I think it's mostly the way I drive, it's not really all that common - they all told me I have the "driveshaft curse". :)

For all I know, I have the stock driveshaft/t-case/tranny in my ix and it has 260,000 miles on it. I dont think any of the owners before me did 6k clutch dumps, and i dont think i will eaither. Unless you are doing something crazy, i dont think the drivetrain will be a problem. Get your friend into the awd club quickly.

yeah, basically. I'm certainly harder on my ix than 90% of the people who own them. it's just too much fun, once you know how to drive it. :D
