Don't chip a 200k engine unless you're SURE it's been refreshed/maintained religiously, or if you could care less when the engine goes.

    Here's my experience with M42's.

First experience - bought a 1993 318i with a bad motor. What was bad about it? Apparently the timing chain stretched and instead of dealing with it, he kept driving it (duh), as noisy as it got. Eventually the tension was so little it allowed the timing to come off and bend some valves. At least that's the story he gave me - and from what I saw, it seemed accurate.

Second experience - sold jflower a wicked cherry 1991 318i 4 door ;) Engine was in rough shape at a little over 200 - rough idle, black smoke, just not a solid engine. That's been removed from his car since then, and is sitting on a pallate doing nothing.

Third experience - this is my favorite. Sold a 1991 318i 4 door (sterling silber this time) to a guy from NC. He flew up, and headed home. Got 2 hours away, and said the engine died. My first thought was the chain - it was noisy, I figured it was the tensioner, and told him to replace it when he got home. Agreed to swap another used M42 in (from kancamangusdriver) with 180k or something, but in good shape. When I popped the VC off the 200+ mile blown motor, I was shocked to see the chain still intact.

That's when I noticed that right near one of the cam holders, something was amiss. Somehow a CAMSHAFT snapped clean through. Clearly, the engine was officially junk :)

Be wary of these engines over 200k. I've had three bad experiences with them, and no good ones. It was the first year BMW used the M42 - might be a reason for it.

    In any case, good luck...

PS - make sure the following have been done recently or plan on doing them immediately:

profile gasket, water pump, timing chain (IMO), tensioner, belts, hoses, VC gasket, and both oil pan gaskets (upper and lower.) Yeah, that's right - it's got a two piece oil pan. The one I got from kancamangus had been hit on the lower pan so hard, the upper pan cracked. Watch out for shit like that.

Okayyyyy I guess I won't chip it then! You've had no GOOD experiences with M42s?
@ 200k don't you think the profile gasket would have failed if it was going to do it's famous "I'm a profile gasket on a pre-1994 M42 and I suck" dance it would have done it by now?

Like I said, the guy told me it leaks nothing, and burns no oil. A snapped cam is something completely unavoidable, but as for other leaks and shit, I think I'll be okay, as long as the chain isn't noisy as hell.

And anyway, if the engine dies...I can always pop an E36 M42 in and wait a few years on a dasc =).

I'll make sure to watch out for all that, and I'll leave this stupid thing bone stock as was the plan. NO MORE MOD MONEY. If I start talking crazy lke I want to do suspension or chip or something of that nature, PLEASE remind me that I'm not modding this car.

        Thanks,
        Don the weary M42 buyer.

if the motor runs fine, by all means chip it, its not like adding a turbo or something.

As for chip brands, hands down, Mark D's is the best, search around this board for reviews.

A chip is not going to blow up your motor. I highly doubt that. While the car Im rocking now is my first personal m42 car, Ive seen numerous other go a long ways with the longest being about 284k. Not bad if I do say so myself. Before putting in his S50 stu beat the crap out of his m42 like it was his job and it took the beating for years and something like 230k I believe before it died.

Okay, then I will chip it. Why not get the best use of it that i can.
I've heard Mark D'Sylva makes the best chip available, and who can complain about better gas mileage. Who do I talk to in order to attain one of these chips, if I so chose?

If this engine makes it up to 240k, let alone 280k, before it needs a rebuild, I'll be thoroughly impressed. Who knows how long I'll even have this car for...the trend has been one car per 8-12 months for the last three of four years. I'm going to try to stick with this one.

im at 280,000 and i did a recent compression check, all numbers within 2psi. i have put big cams in, chipped it, and i drive it hard. It doesn't burn black, it doesn't burn oil, and there is no noises comming from inside the engine. except one lifter ticks, which isn't a big deal. i know a couple other people with M42's and they have never had problems. the cams in these engines are considerably strong, and shouldn't snap unless its been screwd with... or has a defect, which could happen on any motor.

I've heard M42s are solid...not sure if that was just the E36 M42 though. Forged crankshaft and some other bullshit that make it bulletproof. I'll talk to MarkD the second I find out if I'm buying the car or not. I heard there was some kind of a discount between 5% and 40% (randomly) he's running that ends soon, so I should probably jump on it.

What kind of cams did you throw in, and how big a difference did it make?

when I was searching other forums and writeups, I saw a post by mark that said out of every 10 orders he would discount randomly between 5% and 40%. It may not even apply to r3v, I have no idea. Just thought I'd try ot find out.

there was a group buy a little while ago, which i happened to jump in on as well.

the chip i believe goes for $220, but with discount came out to $193 shipped. The chip really made the car exciting to drive! :D

it's still going I remember thinking. Maybe the cutoff is Nov 30th or something. Email him.
Sorry you only got the 5% discount...although 5 is better than none =).

I'm not buying the chip, or anything for that matter, since the reason I'm selling the A4 and jumping into a 1700$ E30 again is MONEY. The last thing I need is to be obsessed like I was with my last 1990 325i (all new bushing, arms, and mounts/Bilstein/H&R/Susp.Tech.sways/CAI/Dinan.chip/m30AFM/sound/euro.grilles/HID.fogs/ATE.discs/Pagid.pads/M50tuB25 swap NEARLY completed/etc...). Money pit for sure.
