Eta 2.93 LSD into IS 3.73 case

My IS LSD is making noise. Can I swap the LSD from my eta into my IS differential case keeping the 3.73 ratio without problems? what other LSDs will working with the 3.73 or all e30 LSD are the same? I can't seem to find a good 3.73 LSD differential and since the eta has been up on floor jacks for month now maybe I'll take it out and swap it for now. If I can find a good 3.73 that would make the job easier.

i don't think you can, since your combining two different gears ratio. although you can just swap in a whole 3.73 in but it will suck on the highway. i swap in a 3.25 on my eta and highway driving is not so bad. try to find a 3.25lsd, e28 535is came with it.

What is the noise your old diff is making?

I am referring to the LSD unit itself. The LSD unit itself has no ratio. I should have ask if the parts and LSD is interchangeable between the 2.93 and 3.73 differential.

Tire squeak on tight turns and clunk noises shifting When I jacked up the rear and spin the wheels they both turn like it should but there are plays. I compared to the known good differential on the eta es.

Yes it has gears to differentiate or to lock the two axle using clutches, but has nothing to do with gear ratios. Correct me if I am wrong. I hope I got all the terms corrects.

I dont think the low ratio carier works with high ratio gears.

The description of the problem sounds more like wear in the differential bearings and gears than wear in the clutches. The bearings and clutches can be replaced with the parts costing about $500-600, but rebuilding a differential isn't a trivial task as clearances and pre-load must be properly set. A decent used 3.73 LSD can usually be had for $250-300.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I want to replace or swap this from my eta Es into my IS. Are they interchangeable?

Well sort of. You'll have to re-shim the output shaft bearings for correct end play and and probably will need to re-shim the pinion shaft for correct mesh, which also means setting correct pre-load. You might as well just rebuild the 3.73 diff you have if you are going to that much trouble. Fitting this in is 80% of the way to a full rebuild.

like I said, I don't think you can use a low ratio carrier with a high ratio ring and pinion.
