    2.7 question(sorry but im a newbie) ;)

    right

jon b here from the u.k. im looking for a cheap and proven way to build a 2.7 m20.

i basically need to find the peeps on here who have done the conversion. i need to know what bits were used and most importantly dyno outputs.

theres so much conflicting advise on the uk forums. all though there are a few 2,7 owners not many know whats been done to the motor.

i owned a 2.7 in 1999. they are excellent engines when done properly. v rapid.

i obviously know that the eta bottom end has to be used. but the main concern is the pistons. as i know the eta pistons arnt compatable with the 2.5 head.

    any help would be apprecated

    thanks peeps :D

    Jon:

Have a read. Fred is on this board, so he can answer more detailed questions if you shoot them his way.

That should be plenty to get you started, however.

    Good Luck!

lucky bloke, as you would say ;)

being in Europe you should have easy access to a 323 (or 320/6) head.

that head bolts right onto the eta bottom end with no conflict with the pistons.

It's much easier than dealing with custom pistson or have them shaved.

It's that simple! I can find a link, but the info in on some other thread on here. Just look on www.e30.de with altavista.com 's translate. There's an article about putting the 323 head on a eta. Easiest stroker ever!

thanks for that. ive sort of knew about the early 200 heads fitting on the eta bottom end. but was still unsure about pistons. ive heard this can give 190bhp. not bad.

            thanks again

I think you could also score a set of high compression euro ETA pistons and use them with your i head. lucky euro bastard, you have way more options than us. ;)

Either get the 323i head and drop it on the 325e block.
Or find the High compression pre 85 525e pistons with 11:1 cr ratio and use them with an I head.
Or even the standard euro eta pistons have a higher cr ratio then the U.S. pistons.
Any eta piston will work with the 325i head, but the cr ratios will be different depending on what pistons are used.
I'm working on building one and am using the following
                pre 85 525e pistons
                ported 325i head
                eta block
                eta crank
eta con-rods. Should be 205-210 hp at the crank.

Ely, nice descript on the alternate 2.7i......but I think he should stick to the 323 head and ship them early euro eta pistons stateside!

and p.s. for all Americans wanting 323 head, there's a 323 engine on http://www.apexengineering.com (not that cheap tho - $500)

Also M50 pistons can be used if you machine them down. Iain who ahd a H27 sent me one of his genuion Hartge H27 pistons when he rebuilt the engine and there M50 pistons that have had there skirt machined, and you run them with I rods on an eta crank.

what's this about stock M50 pistons??? does that really work?? what size are they? hmmm.... this might be cheaper than forged pistons.

I talked to the person who sold the pistons to Iain when he did the rebuild and he said he pulled the pistons out of a stock M50. Then a machine shop had to machine down the skirt so it wouldn't hit the crank. There the right Diameter, I've got the piston here and can take pictures for anyone that is interested and post the Mahle Part #'s of it.
The H27 ran 10:1 cr ratio which is about what you get with the Euro pistons, the M50 pistons might cost a little more to have fit but arn't rare like the euro early pistons.
