Sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't :(

Hey guys I have an 89 325ic I bought a couple months ago. About a month ago when I would go to start it up it would take a little longer than usual after I turned the key to start up. Sometimes it would start right up and others it would take several seconds. Now the car has been needing a jump every couple days. The part Im confused about is that I drove it on a cold start and everything seemed normal and then parked for about 2 hours. I came back and it needed to be jumped.

I am obviously mechanically inclinced so I need your guys help.

    Thanks in advance

    Patrick

You probably need a new alternater , and a new battery my car would do the same thing but I replaced the alternater and the battery and it starts every time now

it could be because when my battery was shot it took longer to start because it didnt have the power to kick the motor quickly

Could be a sign of your starter failing. Usually doesnt start after driving around on a hot day.

Also check your engine to ground cable. This cable must be in good condition, clean, corrosion free, and very secure. This will transfer more current into your starter.

Be sure your alternator is putting out voltage. Should be minimum of 13 volts while car is running. Battery should be minimum of 12 volts with car off. Battery should not drop below 9 volts while cranking.

Oh and if your battery is of unknown age or near 5 years or older, replace it.

definitely also check your battery ground itself, if it's the least bit loose it will cause similar events.
