The non-gas pedal cars will flash a one digit code, 1 thru 4.

Gas pedal cars will flash a four digit code. so ^-^^^^-^^^^-^^^^ ( ^ is a flash, - is a short pause) is 1444. It will flash the 4 digits then wait a while and repeat them again.

Way to dig up an ancient thread, you searched though so props to you.

this link show a list of fault codes:

a lambda code (o2 sensor) can also be caused by intake leaks afaik.

            agree!
i have a small leak on one of the ankle boot that i put some kind of gel glue on it. Guess i have to replace that plastic boot.
Will buy a can of carb cleaner and search for some more vacuum leaks.
            thanks

My 1987 325is did the same thing: Check Engine light on at idle with a code set for O2 sensor.

It was not the O2 sensor.

It was the orings on the vent tube between the intake manifold and the block: they leaked, creating a vacuum leak.

I changed the orings and all is good.
