    tach comes on late

On my 88ix the tach does not work when the car turns on...? However, about 2-3 minutes after the car starts and I am driving down the road, it comes to life and works fine.
Is this a lose wire, short, or the tach is dying???

possible loose contact between the tach pins going into the circuit board or a loose cold solder connection. I have the same problem. in cold weather it doesn't want to work until the car heats up and then I slam my fist down on the dash and it works..lol. also something else to check are the NIcad batteries; they could be on the way out if this wasn't happening before.

Replace SI board batteries if they have not been replaced before.

This can be a case of a sticking needle in the tachometer. Start the engine, then tap on the cluster and see if the tach comes alive.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

this happens to me in the summer. I painted my needles with finger nail paint, and when it gets hot enough, it sticks to the stopper. Gentle tap gives it way.

                thanks for the input

I am going to take the cluster out and check the grounds and to see if the wires are in all the way. Mine does seem to come on when the engine warms up, so that is good to know, others are having the same problem.
                thanks again,

Part of owning an e30 is knowing exactly where and how hard to thump the dash to make the tach work.

Not quite...taking care of your SI board and ground nuts should solve this problem.

Yes, I was hitting the tach to see if I could get it to move:). No luck, but after 5mins of driving, it turns on and works fine. I think it is a ground problem. PO had it out, might not have tightened everything down.
Will pull it soon and get it done!
                      thanks,

My 92 does the same thing.
It just sits there until the car is a bit warmer, then it comes to life but sticks at 1500 or so until I rev up past around 4k. After the car is fully warmed up, it's fine and smooth.

Lmk what you find as I am interested.
