      Putting the nut on also keeps the tie rod from flying up and hitting you/the car when it breaks free.

          Steering Rack boot may not be as easy as everyone is saying. Does your car have a steering damper? If so you may need to pull off the rack-end depending on what side your doing.

          Also I'd recommend doing both boots, if ones fucked chances are the other wont be far away.
