Fan Clutch Easier To Remove When Hot?

A month ago I pulled my fan clutch with a few whacks of a mallet and that was with it warm. We put it back on and let engine tighten it itself

Now I am trying to get it off and lots of mallet/hammer hits wont do the trick. I got confused at first which way to hit it but now I got it figured out and it wont budge. Engine is stone cold.. and every hit I just screech the serpentine belt.

I dont need to get the thing off.. but it got me thinking. Is the thing easier to remove when warm?

Maybe, but to be honest, I don't think the water pump gets hot enough to make a difference. But I could be wrong and you may have answered your own question.

I am worried I am going to hurt the belt. I probably tightened it a little by giving a few whacks in the tightening direction :( I figured out I dont need it off to do what I need to though so its no big deal

Fuck the belt. Belt is cheap. When you whack the wrench grip the belt with your free hand putting more tension on the belt, that should keep it from slippimg so much. That is if you want to remove the fan for a little more room.

          ^ yup did that.

I just finished up what I was doing. Will post pics/diy tomorrow after I test out my repair.

Glad you got it off, but on the warm v cold question since most of the heat will be coming from the coolant by way of conduction, the water pump shaft will expand sooner than fan nut (which is actually being cooled by the passing air at the same time it is being slowly warmed by the water pump).

By all rights, the warm threads will be tighter than the cold ones so you would want to heat the nut only to make it easier.

I never did get it off, just pulled the shroud back and that was enough.

Im just baffled how it came off easy enough before and now not so much. My belt has coolant on it though, so it is slipping more so than a dry one.

Fan pulley retainer can help. I've only removed the fan clutch twice: one car didn't need the retainer, the other definitely did.
