    When the AFM went out in my 533i (motronic 1.0) I had the same exact symptoms. Started and died after about 2 or 3 seconds, died when I touched the gas. Then it stopped starting all together for the most part, just a few sputters of life then nothing.

        thats what mine does, but i just swapped in a different afm and it didnt help

                It's not the afm, it's not the o2 sensor, it's not the fuel pump, it's not the fuel filter

                    I know this is old but did you check the TPS sensor the way bentley states? I had to remove the TB and reset the stupid thing in mine. While I had the TB off I cleaned the TPS sensor as well.
