Need help removing key ignition cylinder.

I am about to purchase a new E30 project but the seller doesn't have the keys for the car. I have removed ignition cylinders before but never without a key. Just wondering if this is possible or what I need to do? I have tried searching but can't find anything. Thanks for the help.

PS I am not trying to steal a car....

Get the VIN and go to the dealer with proof of ownership to get a new key. If you have not made the purchase then have the seller get the key for you.

If you don't want to spend money on a new key then your only option is to drill it out.

I didn't know this was an option. I'll try this first. Thanks

Grab the trunk lock and go to a locksmith. He should be able to make you a key. Lets hope the locks match though.

Good idea. I'll call a few locksmiths tomorrow.

Dealer will run you @ $65 for a key. I don't think locksmith will be cheaper, plus it might not work for the ignition.

Wow, that's cheap. Many locksmiths would not touch BMW locks around here.

This is a PITA of a job...

                        Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Using a 1⁄8 in. (3mm) drill bit, mounted in a right angle drive drill adapter, drill out the retaining pin, going no deeper than 1⁄2 in. (12.7mm).

Place a chisel at the base of the ignition lock cylinder cap and, using a hammer, break away the cap from the lock cylinder.

Using a 3⁄8 in. (10mm) drill bit, drill down the center of the ignition lock cylinder key slot about 1 3⁄4 in. (44mm), until the lock cylinder breaks loose from the steering column cover casting.
Remove the lock cylinder and the drill shavings from the housing.

Carefully inspect the steering column housing for signs of damage from the previous operation. If any damage is apparent, the components should be replaced.

Good luck...and keep in mind that this will take a long time to do. The metal is very tough!.
