heat-dependant stalling

my 84 318i stalls once the temperature guage gets to 1/5th (just above the blue section). itll idle completely fine after that point, but open throttle makes it lose idle speed all the way down to stalling. once stalled, it cant be started again until the temp guage is in the middle of the blue section or lower (~1/10th). any ideas?

i loosened the idle control valve screw a wee tiny bit and now its perfectly fine. odd.
