Fuel leak, how does the tank work.

I need some help getting my fuel tank to stop leaking. It's a 1990 325 with the 2 hole tank and no little fuel line connecting the LH and RH tank at the bottom.

I have a leak that looks like it's coming from the fill spout or just above it. I think there was about 3.5 gal in the tank. (1 from before and I added 2.5). It has already leaked 1 gal and there is no sign of stopping.

I don't understand how there could be this much gas above the fill spout? The RH side of the tank must be full and the LH must be empty. I think if I can get the gas to the LH side it will stop leaking until I can drain it properly.

    Any ideas?

You can drain the right hand side of the tank via the drain plug.

The tank doesn't have a cross-over tube, like the earlier 55L tank, because that was replaced be a siphon in the left side of the tank that is operated by fuel returning from the engine bay. The siphon lift fuel over the hump and into the right side.

The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Take the covers off the fill area, inside the fender.

You'll find a mess of hoses, and some metal fittings. Which rust....

They're part of the EVAP system, and pressure in the
tank can drive fuel up to them, so if they're leaking,
you can dump way more than it seems like you should.
